Meet Dr. Karkheck
Dr. Leslie Karkheck
Dr. Karkheck was raised on a horse farm in Ida, MI. She studied Mathematics and Animal Science as an undergraduate at Monroe County Community College and Michigan State University. She received her veterinary degree from MSU in 2008 and completed and intensive internship at world renowned Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Kentucky. There, she met her engineer husband, Jesse and had the opportunity to stay on as an equine anesthetist for an additional year. (You can see her featured here: YouTube: Anesthetizing the Horse)
The Karkhecks were married in 2010 and stayed in Lexington until 2011, where Dr. Karkheck worked in general small animal medicine and as a emergency doctor before they moved to northern New Jersey. Dr. Karkheck practiced small animal and some equine medicine near New York City for three years before her first child was born in 2014 and the family moved home to Michigan. During this time she completed additional training and practice in equine dentistry, diagnostic ultrasound, limited orthopedic surgery and acupuncture (Chi Institute of Chinese Medicine www.tcvm.com).
In 2017 Dr. Karkheck began serving the Toledo area as an emergency medicine veterinarian at MedVet Toledo and in October, 2018 she gave birth to her second child.
Dr. Karkheck has dedicated her life to the care and well-being of pets and their people. She has expertise and experience as a veterinarian gained from practicing medicine in many different environments and including general, emergency and referral practices. Dr. Karkheck brings her broad experience home to serve the community she loves.
Meet Dr. Schenk
Dr. Marian Schenk
Dr. Marian Schenk grew up in a military family, born in Australia and living all over the US. She went to DeSales University in Pennsylvania to study biology and mathematics as an undergraduate, and then on to Tufts University in Boston, Massachusetts for veterinary school. While earning her DVM, she also earned her Master’s in Comparative Biomedical Research and a Master’s in Laboratory Animal Science concurrently graduating in 2014. She practiced emergency and general medicine for 3 years outside of Pittsburgh while her husband, Nick, a human doctor, completed his residency. They then relocated to Greensboro, NC for Nick’s fellowship and Dr. Schenk continued in general practice. They moved back to Pittsburgh for a year while Dr. Mr. Schenk became faculty at his previous residency and Dr. Mrs. Schenk went back to emergency work. After the birth of their second child in October of 2018, they decided to move back to Michigan, where her husband grew up to be closer to family.
Dr. Schenk is committed to bringing quality medicine to every pet and animal. She has experience treating all types of critters in many capacities and looks forward to using those skills to keep your beloved pet healthy.
